Japan - IMF PhD Scholarship at North American Universities


The Institute of International Education (IIE) is pleased to announce that it is accepting applications for the Japan-IMF Scholarship Program for Advanced Studies in Economics. This is a scholarship awarded by the International Monetary Fund to high achieving Asian nationals currently pursuing or intending to pursue a PhD in Macroeconomics or a related subject at a leading North American university.

Background:
In 1996 with financial support from the Government of Japan, the Japan-IMF Scholarship Program for Advanced Studies was created to train selected Asian nationals as applied economists to work at the IMF or in their national governments.

Award:
The scholarship covers all reasonable expenses for two years of graduate study in macroeconomics or a related subject, including one round trip airfare, full university tuition and fees, medical insurance, books and living expenses. The scholarship has an internship component at the IMF.

Qualifications:

  • A national of an IMF Asian member country.
  • Able to complete their PhD program by the age of 33 so not older than 27 at the time of applying.
  • Academic background in macroeconomics or a related subject.
  • Interest in working at the International Monetary Fund or in government.
  • A record of high academic achievement. Minimum GPA of 3.3; Minimum Average GRE Score of 600 in Quantitative and Analytical; 500 Verbal.

Procedure for Applying:
Students generally apply for the Japan-IMF Scholarship either the year before beginning their graduate studies in economics or in their first year of graduate school at a leading North American university. The following must be provided by each applicant:

  • A completed application form
  • A one-page personal statement of not more than 250 words explaining the applicantโ€™s interest in working as an IMF economist and career goals, previous academic studies and future research subjects, and other information as to the applicantโ€™s background
  • A university transcript for the applicantโ€™s prior studies and, if already a graduate student at the time of graduation, a current university transcript
  • An original or a photocopy of the applicantโ€™s GRE and TOEFL scores. (Applicants can use the code number 8401 for their TOEFL and GRE scores to be reported directly to IIE). Note: TOEFL is not required if applicant has an undergraduate or masterโ€™s degree from a university located in the United States or the United Kingdom
  • A copy of one of the applicantโ€™s applications to a leading North American university. Please do not send academic papers or materials other than those requested above. Applications and required documents must be mailed; those sent by e-mail or fax will not be accepted.
